Nine Roles of an Instructional Coach

 


 

Coaches act as:

 

1. Data Coaches

Purpose: ensure that student achievement data is used to drive decisions at the classroom and school level

Responsibilities: identify school-wide and grade level/department trends, facilitate data dialogues,support teachers in using data to improve instruction, facilitate data conversations that analyze student learning and identify next steps.

 

2. Classroom Supporters

Purpose: to increase the quality and effectiveness of classroom instruction

Responsibilities: model/demonstrate effective instructional strategies, co-plan and co-teach lessons, observe and give feedback to teachers.

 

3. Resource Provider

Purpose: to listen to the needs of teachers and providing appropriate resources based on those needs

Responsibilities: curriculum expert, ability to differentiate resources provided based on the needs/abilities of the teacher, help teachers integrate resources into the classroom.

 

4. Mentors

Purpose: assist new teachers, provide support when needed, utilize problem-solving skills

Responsibilities: identify areas of focus, questioning, facilitate teachers to think through their own problems, differentiate support for individuals

 

5. Learning Facilitators

Purpose: understand and facilitate adult learning, generate discussions around analyzing and improving

student work

Responsibilities: flexibility, create a trusting environment, build confidence in teachers

 

6. School Leaders

Purpose: facilitate meetings to meet and address school goals

Responsibilities: knowledge of school improvement plans, allowing time for practice, questioning

 

7. Instructional specialists

Purpose: to align instruction with curriculum to meet the needs of ALL learners

Responsibilities: assist teachers in the selection and implementation of appropriate instructional strategies, assist teachers in implementation of differentiation strategies, work with individuals and groups of teachers.

 

8. Curriculum specialists

Purpose: to ensure implementation of adopted curriculum

Responbilities: deepen teacher's content knowledge, assist teachers to align the written/taught/tested curriculum, assist teachers in assessments and essential standards, facilitate the integration of curricular areas.

 

9. Catalysts for change

Purpose: to create disequilibrium with the current state as an impetus to explore alternatives to current practice.

Knowledge and Skills: understand the change process, be aware of national and local trends and research, use creative and critical problems solving skills, willingness to change the status quo.

 

10. Learner

This is a new section included in the book, "Taking the Lead."

Purpose: To model continuous learning, to keep current, and to be a thought leader in a school.

Knowledge and Skills: Understanding how adults learn, and their strengths and weaknesses as learners.
