Shawn Colleary Visit (8:15-8:30)

Background about the Instructional Improvement CD

•How did it come about?

Initially it was seen as an administrative tool.

•How is it currently being used?

To focus school improvement efforts at the individual and collective levels;

to link Excellence & Equity initiatives to teacher evaluation cycle.

To integrate teacher evaluation records into instructional templates in the CD.

Used by Star Mentors to guide new teachers to more effective instructional planning.

•Who has seen it? And how have they been instructed to use it?

As part of the teacher evaluation process, these documents intended

to guide and inform younger, sometimes less classroom-experienced principals

•How can we, as coaches, use it to support our schools?

As an aid to develop coaching consistency between and among schools across the district.

To work towards closing the gap between talking the talk and walking the walk

by detailing what the walk of good instruction looks and sounds like.

Thinking about growth and learning should always be the focus, not merely the performance.

We are "growth agents, not change agents."

Mary Johnson Visit (8:30-11:15)

How does coaching look and sound using the teaching/learning cycle?

"Coach-as-Diagnostician"

 Ann's Scenario for Thursday:

What did you do using the SmartBoard?

Why did you decide to use the SmartBoard for this particular lesson, with these particular students?

How did the lesson go?  Did the lesson as taught differ from the lesson as planned?

What are the kids saying and doing that tells you they're getting it?

What are the kids saying and doing that you haven't seen before?

Are your kids learning when you use the SmartBoard?  How do you know?

How are your focus kids responding/reacting to your SmartBoard lessons?  Are they getting it?  How do you know?

What kinds of things did you say and do with the SmartBoard that you wouldn't -or couldn't- do without the tool?

Ann's Final Answer:  How has learning in your classroom been transformed, and how do you know it?

How has learning changed in your classroom, and how do you know it?

 Mary's Walk Away Prompt:

Continue to explore and make explicit our own beliefs and values within the context of our group, and within the contexts of our schools.

Being conscious of your own head and heart, and being -and becoming- increasingly congruent.
