•8:29 - 9:02 Role of the Coach Revisited (as per Dave)
"Our role is to help teachers become independent and continue to grow,
especially when we're not there..."
So how is this going,
and what can we individually and collectively do to move this goal forward?
Some kind of help's the kind of help that helping's all about
But some kind of help's the kind of help we all could do without!
-Shel Silverstein
-Not as many model lessons as Year 1.
-Some of us are doing the same lessons year after year, like we are part of teachers' yearly planning.
-It's okay to say "no" to these teachers, and instead ask them what they will take responsibility for teaching (and learning).
-The students are our "manipulatives" in that when we talk to teachers, we say, "I'm using the kids to teach YOU"
-We should reinforce the teaching model, where just as teachers model for students and then students do it independently, the same holds true for teachers. We, as coaches, are modeling for the teacher, with the expectation that the teacher will be able to do it independently.
-Gather some ideas to help "push" teachers, through email, for example.
-If you don't use it, you're going to lose it
-How do we put some of this "foreshadowing" in our replies to help teachers become independent?
•9:02- 9:29 Everyday Math CD: Paul
Paul passed out to each coach a copy of the EDM Teacher's Guide for K-5
•9:02- 9:29 Instructional Improvement Disk Resources - Joel
Lots of great information in this folder, and worth exploring further. It's in "IT Coaches" folder, called Instructional Improvement
It would benefit us to 'dissect' the folder and work in small groups to compile a "top 10" in each category
Check with Dave and/or Shawn to find out more about this resource: audience and purpose, how it's been shared, who it's for, what principals are doing with it, what teachers are doing with it, etc.
We could do this during Office Ours and work on disseminating this resource
Work in partners on assigned topic, and before you meet with your partner, look over your section, and you and your partner can discuss which resource is the best.
Action: we will use time from our next Office Ours to decide who will be doing which topic, and then do some of the work during our meeting
